Activists described climate impacts in their home countries and called for stronger youth representation in UN negotiations. Thousands of protesters gathered outside COP30 in Belem, Brazil, peacefully blocking the venue to amplify their message.
Brazilian youth groups, Indigenous communities, and climate organizations joined the march to demand urgent action during the UN talks. Fridays for Future activists emphasized that young people will inherit the consequences of climate change.
Rachelle Junsay from Climate Action Philippines said youth feel frustrated because decision-makers discuss solutions while the actual victims remain excluded. She warned that ignoring affected communities threatens the survival of future generations.
Protests Resume After Three-Year Pause
Demonstrators returned outside UN climate talks for the first time since 2021. Organizers promoted the conference as a platform empowering Indigenous peoples.
Earlier in the week, protesters surrounded the venue twice, causing minor injuries to two security guards. Saturday’s march intentionally stopped short of the conference site, where full-day sessions continued.
Participants welcomed the chance to protest more openly in Belem than at recent summits in Azerbaijan, the UAE, and Egypt. Youth leader Ana Heloisa Alves called the event the largest climate march she has ever attended, insisting that leaders could not ignore the crowd.
Alves carried signs defending the Tapajos River from commercial development. She declared, “The river is for the people,” highlighting the intersection of environmental and local rights.
Calls for Broader Participation and Accountability
Pablo Neri, coordinator for Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra in Pará, urged organizers to include more voices to reflect a climate movement moving toward mass participation.
The COP30 talks run through Friday, 21 November. Analysts and participants do not expect major new agreements but hope to see progress on prior commitments, including financial aid for poorer nations adapting to climate impacts.
The United States is absent from the talks. President Donald Trump has mocked climate change as a hoax and withdrew the country from the 2015 Paris Agreement aimed at limiting global warming.
