George Russell delivered a stunning performance to claim pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, strengthening his case for a new Mercedes contract. The Briton outpaced Max Verstappen by nearly two-tenths of a second on the Marina Bay street circuit, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris finishing third and fifth respectively.
Verstappen, however, was left frustrated. The reigning champion abandoned his final flying lap after encountering Norris, who was on an in-lap. Waving in frustration, Verstappen complained of losing crucial downforce in the final corners. “That is what happens when there is a car in front of you and that is noted and will be remembered as well,” he said, adding that the incident had cost him time on a vital Q3 run.
Norris dismissed the criticism, insisting he had done nothing wrong. “They always complain, they complain about everything, that’s Red Bull,” he said. “I didn’t even know, I was like three seconds ahead or something.”
Whether Verstappen could have beaten Russell remains uncertain, as the Dutchman was already trailing on his first hot lap. Russell’s pole, achieved with flawless precision and aided by Mercedes’ new front-wing upgrade, was a statement drive. It came despite the 27-year-old still recovering from illness, further underlining his resilience.
Kimi Antonelli impressed with fourth place in the second Mercedes, while Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will start from sixth and seventh. Williams suffered a blow after both cars were disqualified for DRS infringements, sending Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz to the back of the grid.
Sunday’s race promises high drama at turn one, with Russell chasing his first win in Singapore and Verstappen seeking to close the championship gap on Piastri. Meanwhile, McLaren can clinch their second consecutive constructors’ title with a podium finish.
