Lawmakers are urging strong enforcement of the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (USMCA) to support U.S. farms and stabilize agricultural exports. Bipartisan co‑chairs of the Agriculture Trade Caucus sent a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative calling for strict adherence to trade rules under the agreement.

The lawmakers emphasized that consistent enforcement is essential to safeguard American farmers from unfair trade practices. They said that clear and predictable trade rules help U.S. producers maintain access to Canadian and Mexican markets, which are key destinations for agricultural goods.

USMCA, which replaced NAFTA in 2020, modernized trade rules across North America. The agreement includes updated provisions on tariffs, market access, and agricultural standards. Experts say these rules have already helped U.S. farmers increase exports and grow their revenue streams.

The Agriculture Trade Caucus highlighted that fair trade enforcement under USMCA protects critical sectors such as grains, dairy, and meat. They noted that reliable market access is crucial for farmers to plan production, invest in new technologies, and manage supply chains efficiently.

Lawmakers stressed that USMCA enforcement not only supports farm profitability but also strengthens rural economies. Higher exports generate jobs, boost local incomes, and create opportunities for communities dependent on agriculture.

The caucus members urged the Trade Representative to monitor compliance closely and take swift action against any trade violations. They said that robust enforcement ensures a level playing field for U.S. farmers and prevents foreign practices from undermining domestic production.

Industry experts welcomed the call, noting that sustained enforcement is critical to maintaining long-term growth in agricultural exports. They also emphasized that USMCA provides the stability farmers need to compete globally while protecting American interests.

The letter comes amid ongoing efforts to expand U.S. agricultural exports and strengthen economic ties with Canada and Mexico. By enforcing USMCA rules, lawmakers aim to secure predictable markets for American producers and reinforce the benefits of the trade agreement.

Officials also highlighted how consistent enforcement encourages investment in innovation and sustainable farming. Stable export markets allow U.S. farmers to adopt modern farming techniques and environmentally friendly practices while meeting global demand.

Tracking export growth under USMCA shows tangible results. Strong enforcement ensures that gains in trade, such as higher agricultural shipments to Canada and Mexico, continue to benefit farmers and rural communities.

Overall, the Agriculture Trade Caucus emphasized that USMCA enforcement is not just about compliance. It is a key strategy to protect U.S. agriculture, stabilize exports, and support the livelihoods of farmers nationwide. Lawmakers called for continued vigilance to ensure that the agreement delivers its full potential for the American farming sector.
