Trump’s Threat Triggers Anxiety Across Nigeria

Nigeria faces renewed tension after US President Donald Trump threatened military intervention over alleged Christian persecution. Trump ordered the Pentagon to prepare for possible action, claiming Nigeria’s government allowed the killing of Christians. His post warned that the US could “go in guns blazing” to eliminate Islamic extremists.

On Sunday, Nigerians woke up to reports of Trump’s directive, sparking both support and outrage. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rejected the threat but offered to meet Trump to discuss counterterrorism cooperation, emphasizing that any partnership must respect Nigeria’s sovereignty. Tinubu also stated that labeling Nigeria as religiously intolerant “does not reflect the national reality.”

Debate Grows Over Religion and Violence

Tinubu’s spokesperson Daniel Bwala described Trump’s remarks as a “negotiating tactic,” noting that Nigeria and the US already share intelligence and collaborate against Islamist insurgents. Rights groups such as Amnesty International report that more than 10,000 people have died in jihadist attacks since Tinubu took office.

Nigeria, home to about 220 million people evenly split between Christians and Muslims, continues to face violence from Boko Haram and other extremist groups. While Washington calls it a Christian genocide, many Nigerians argue the issue is more complex. Analysts say most victims are Muslims living in the country’s north, where most attacks occur.

Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo disagreed, claiming that Christians remain the main targets of Islamist violence. Advocacy groups like Open Doors and International Christian Concern estimate over 7,000 Christian deaths in 2025 alone, describing the attacks as organized persecution.

    Resource Interests Deepen Suspicion

Trump’s threat arrived weeks after US Senator Ted Cruz urged Congress to label Nigeria a violator of religious freedom. The warning divided Nigerians: some welcomed US military support, while others saw ulterior motives. Political commentator Cyril Abaku supported external help, saying, “If it helps protect our communities, we should accept it.”

Yet many Nigerians suspect Trump’s concerns link to Nigeria’s growing role in rare earth minerals vital for defense and clean energy industries. Analysts point to large deposits of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and neodymium in Nigeria’s insurgency-hit northeast.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore dismissed the idea of foreign intervention. “Nigeria doesn’t need a savior,” he said. “It needs accountable leadership that protects every citizen and ends corruption and violence.”

The United States first listed Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” in 2020 for systematic violations of religious freedom, though that classification did not specifically cite Christian persecution.
