Idrissa Gueye received a warm response from his Everton teammates after apologising for his red-card offence during Monday’s win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The midfielder became the first Premier League player in 17 years to be sent off for striking a teammate after slapping Michael Keane in the 13th minute. Despite playing with 10 men for most of the match, Everton held on for a heroic 1–0 win, giving David Moyes his first victory at Old Trafford as an away manager.
After the match, Gueye asked to address the squad in the dressing room, where he apologised directly to Keane and to the team for putting them in such a difficult position. He also thanked them for managing to secure the win. His apology was met with a round of applause from the squad.
Although Moyes said he “likes my players fighting each other” in reference to their competitive spirit, Everton are still expected to apply internal disciplinary measures, including fines, in line with the club’s usual procedures.
Gueye will serve a three-match suspension against Newcastle, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest. He could also be called up for Senegal duty ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, potentially keeping him out until at least mid-December.
He later issued a public apology on social media, taking full responsibility and promising the incident would not happen again.
