Antarctica, the planet’s last great wilderness, is facing increasing pressure from human activity. Visitor numbers have risen dramatically, from fewer than 8,000 annually in the 1990s to more than 124,000 in 2023–24, with projections suggesting up to 450,000 by 2034. During the 2024–25 season, over 118,000 tourists travelled to the region, more than 80,000 of whom set foot on Antarctic soil. Even with guidelines from the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), including shore landing limits and biosecurity checks, tourism itself contributes significantly to environmental strain, with an average trip generating 5.44 tonnes of CO₂ per passenger.
Pollution and Ecosystem Threats
A study published in Nature Sustainability found that areas with human activity now have toxic metal concentrations up to ten times higher than 40 years ago. Tourists and research missions disturb wildlife, trample fragile flora, and risk introducing invasive species. Black carbon from ships, planes, and diesel generators darkens snow, increasing heat absorption and accelerating melting. Scientists estimate that a single tourist can contribute to the melting of around 100 tons of snow, with scientific expeditions having up to ten times the impact. Although measures such as hybrid electric ships and wildlife-watching rules exist, experts emphasize that only significant reductions in fossil fuel use and a transition to renewable energy can mitigate the damage and protect Antarctica’s fragile ecosystems.
