Largest Comparative Study Reveals Clear Differences
A landmark international study has ranked common antidepressants by their effects on physical health, offering the first comprehensive comparison of how these drugs influence weight, blood pressure, and other key bodily measures. Analyzing data from more than 58,000 participants across dozens of clinical trials, researchers found significant variation among medications, challenging the assumption that all antidepressants carry similar physiological risks.
Weight and Heart Rate Among the Biggest Concerns
The analysis revealed the greatest differences in weight gain and heart rate. Medications such as bupropion were associated with the least weight gain, while others—including paroxetine, escitalopram, and duloxetine—showed higher increases on average. Some drugs also raised resting heart rate and blood pressure more than others, suggesting that the choice of antidepressant can meaningfully influence long-term cardiovascular and metabolic health.
Findings Highlight Need for Personalized Prescribing
Experts stress that the findings should not deter patients from taking prescribed medication but underscore the importance of personalized treatment and close monitoring. Clinicians are encouraged to weigh mental health benefits against potential physical side effects, especially for patients with preexisting heart or metabolic conditions. Researchers say the rankings will help doctors and patients make more informed decisions about antidepressant therapy in everyday care.
