Outbreak Overview
On September 4, 2025, the Democratic Republic of Congo declared its 16th Ebola outbreak, centered in the Bulape and Mweka health zones of Kasai Province. As of early September, there have been 63 suspected or confirmed cases and 16 deaths, including four healthcare workers.
Vaccination Campaign Initiated
In response, the World Health Organization has launched a vaccination campaign targeting frontline health workers and those who have been in contact with confirmed Ebola cases. An initial 400 doses of the Ervebo vaccine have been delivered to Bulape, with an additional 45,000 doses approved for deployment. The strategy uses a ring vaccination approach, focusing on those at highest risk of exposure.
Challenges and Regional Concerns
The response is challenged by limited access to affected areas and funding constraints. A new case identified 70 kilometers from Bulape has raised concerns about potential regional spread, particularly to neighboring Angola. Officials stress the importance of prompt and adequate support to contain the outbreak effectively.
