The Central Coast is preparing to light up after dark as two local districts receive a combined $355,000 to boost the region’s night-time economy. The Gosford Entertainment Precinct and The Esplanade in Terrigal have secured $175,000 and $180,000 respectively through the NSW Government’s Uptown Grant Program.
The funding aims to transform these areas into lively, after-dark destinations that attract both residents and visitors. The investment is part of the NSW Government’s 24-Hour Economy Strategy, which promotes vibrant night-life districts across the state.
Mayor Lawrie McKinna welcomed the announcement, highlighting the benefits for tourism and local businesses.
“This funding is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Central Coast’s unique character,” Mayor McKinna said. “From Terrigal’s waterfront dining to Gosford’s arts and live music scene, this grant helps create spaces where locals feel proud and visitors feel welcome.”
He praised the efforts of the Gosford Entertainment Precinct and The Esplanade Terrigal teams, calling their work a “game-changer” for the region. “We’re excited to see these districts come to life and set an example for other areas across the Coast,” he added.
The program’s expansion to the Central Coast, Greater Newcastle, and Illawarra-Shoalhaven reflects a broader push to highlight regional attractions. 24-Hour Economy Commissioner Michael Rodrigues said the Uptown Program helps districts across the state tell their stories and showcase local offerings.
“It’s great to see Terrigal’s coastal hub and Gosford’s entertainment precinct working to lift these iconic destinations,” Rodrigues said.
Both districts will soon be featured on the NSW Government’s Neon Marketplace. This platform is designed to help 24-hour economy operators collaborate, grow, and promote their local night-time offerings.
The grants will fund initiatives such as improved lighting, signage, street art, and entertainment programs. These enhancements aim to create a safer and more attractive night environment, drawing more visitors to enjoy food, music, and culture after dark.
Local business owners have expressed optimism about the potential impact of the funding. Many hope it will increase foot traffic, encourage longer visits, and strengthen the region’s hospitality and arts sectors.
“The grant allows us to invest in experiences that make people want to stay out later and explore our district,” said a representative from The Esplanade Terrigal business group. “It’s a chance to highlight what makes Terrigal special.”
Similarly, the Gosford Entertainment Precinct plans to use its funding to expand live performances, public art displays, and street-level dining options. Officials say these improvements will create a more vibrant and inclusive environment for residents and tourists alike.
The NSW Government’s 24-Hour Economy Strategy emphasizes the importance of supporting local economies while boosting community engagement. By investing in night-time experiences, the program encourages regions like the Central Coast to grow sustainably while enhancing cultural and recreational opportunities.
With the grants now confirmed, the Central Coast is expected to see a noticeable rise in evening activity. Local officials, business owners, and community members are eager to see the districts flourish and become models for regional night-time development.
