Canadian privacy officials found that TikTok fails to safeguard children’s personal data. They said the platform allows underage access and misuses sensitive information.
Children continue using the app
Hundreds of thousands of Canadian children access TikTok each year. The company maintains the platform is not for users under 13. Investigators confirmed many minors still use the service.
Sensitive data exploited
The inquiry revealed that TikTok collected personal information from large numbers of children. The platform then used this data for targeted advertising and content recommendations. Officials warned this practice could harm young users.
Company pledges stronger safeguards
TikTok announced plans to enhance protections for Canadian users. It disagreed with some findings but did not clarify which conclusions it contests.
Privacy commissioner issues warning
Privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne led the investigation with other officials. He said TikTok collects vast amounts of user data, including from minors. He warned that targeted ads and content could negatively affect children.
Mr Dufresne confirmed TikTok agreed to strengthen measures against underage access. The company also pledged to provide clearer information on how it manages children’s data.
TikTok responds
A spokesperson said the platform welcomed the inquiry. They highlighted that Canadian officials accepted several proposals to improve protections. The spokesperson added that TikTok remains committed to transparency and privacy despite disputing some conclusions.
Global scrutiny grows
The Canadian findings add to international pressure on TikTok. Governments are examining its impact on children and raising national security concerns. The Chinese-owned company and Beijing deny all allegations.
In the United States, former President Donald Trump discussed TikTok with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Talks included a potential takeover of TikTok’s US operations by American companies.
In Europe, the European Commission ordered staff in 2023 to remove TikTok from corporate phones and devices. Officials said the step aimed to protect data and boost cybersecurity.
