Israeli Forces Hit Iranian Defence Systems
The Israeli military has announced a “broad strike” against defence installations in western Iran, escalating conflict in the region. The operation follows joint US-Israeli air strikes carried out early Saturday, marking one of the most significant military moves in the area in recent weeks.
Tensions had been building as Washington and Tehran negotiated a potential deal to curb Iran’s nuclear programme, but the strikes suggest broader grievances may now be driving military action.
Iran Retaliates Across the Gulf
In response, Iran launched attacks on American military bases throughout the Gulf region, sparing only Oman. US President Donald Trump framed the strikes as addressing longstanding issues with Iran, dating back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and urged Iranian citizens to take shelter while later encouraging them to challenge their government.
International Response and Travel Disruptions
Global leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, called for restraint, and the UN Security Council is scheduled to meet to assess the situation.
The conflict has also disrupted regional air travel, with several countries closing their airspace. Flights to cities such as Tel Aviv and Dubai were canceled, diverted, or forced to return, highlighting the broader impact of the military escalation on civilian life.
