Arsenal fear that defender Gabriel Magalhães could be sidelined for at least a month after suffering a thigh injury while playing for Brazil, dealing a serious blow to the Premier League leaders during a pivotal stretch of the season.
The 27-year-old limped off during Brazil’s 2-0 win over Senegal at the Emirates last weekend. After initial scans confirmed a right-thigh muscle injury, Gabriel returned to London for further tests, which are ongoing. Although Arsenal have not issued an official timeline, he is already ruled out of Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham and the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich three days later.
Depending on the severity, Gabriel could miss a run of major fixtures, including league games against Chelsea, Brentford and Aston Villa, plus the Champions League trip to Club Brugge on 10 December. Arsenal also face Wolves and a rearranged match at Everton before Christmas.
Gabriel has been central to Arsenal’s formidable defensive record this season, playing every Premier League minute as the team conceded just five goals in 11 games and kept eight straight clean sheets in all competitions before the draw at Sunderland. New signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are candidates to step in against Spurs.
Mikel Arteta has further injury concerns. Viktor Gyökeres remains doubtful after a hamstring issue, while captain Martin Ødegaard, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli are also out. Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann revealed that Kai Havertz suffered a “minor relapse” in his knee recovery, pushing his expected return to late December.
With Arsenal holding a four-point lead over Manchester City, Gabriel’s absence arrives at a delicate moment for a squad already stretched thin.
