Sir David Attenborough’s new BBC series Kingdom captures a stunning scene of a lion rescuing a pregnant hyena from a pack of wild dogs — one of many rare moments filmed over five years in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley.
The series follows lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild dogs as they battle to survive in one of Africa’s wildest landscapes. Executive producer Mike Gunton said: “Only nature could write this script.”
Narrated by Attenborough, Kingdom features remarkable footage — from a wild dog rescued from a crocodile to a hyena hiding stolen food underwater. It also highlights threats such as habitat loss and snare traps.
Scientific consultant Dr Matthew Becker of the Zambia Carnivore Programme said the project provided “invaluable data” for conservation. Despite the dangers facing these predators, producer Simon Blakeney said the series carries “a message of optimism — it’s not hopeless.”
